This March, Cosanti Originals is pleased to host two exciting workshops that invite participants to “get their hands dirty” and learn about the unique time-honored techniques used by Cosanti artisans themselves for decades. These events include:

Casting Cosanti

Friday, March 6 |9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This unique hands-on opportunity melds artistic expression informed by the desert with an exploration of Cosanti’s innovative and experimental historic site. Participants will be guided through the process of carving and shaping a mold made from desert earth and will create a cast plaster tile using the same techniques that shaped the construction of Cosanti itself. Schedule is as follows:

9-9:15 a.m. — Sign-in and orientation
9:15-10 a.m. — Guided tour of Cosanti
10-11:30 a.m. — Silt designing, pigmenting and casting
11:30 a.m.-noon — Short break, guests are welcome to bring a boxed lunch
Noon-12:30 p.m. — Excavation, photos and conclusion
This activity is $125 per person, plus taxes and fees. It is limited to 15 participants.

Slip Cast 1: Bell Making Workshop

Friday, March 20 |10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This class is designed for Cosanti bell enthusiasts and anyone who has wondered how these beautiful pieces of art are made. The workshop guides participants through the 70-year tradition of casting and carving ceramic bells. Schedule is as follows:

10-10:15 a.m. — Sign-in and orientation
10:15-11 a.m. — Guided tour of Cosanti
11 a.m.-11:30 a.m. — Casting and carving demonstration
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — Designing and carving a bell
12:30 p.m.-1 p.m. — Photos and conclusion
The cost for this workshop is $165 per person, plus taxes and fees. The course is limited to just 10 participants.
