Sidney H. Zuber, M.D.

Dr. Sidney H. Zuber, of Scottsdale, passed away March 20, 2012. He was born in St. Johns, Newfoundland, on July 29, 1931.

Dr. Zuber earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Richmond and a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After internships and residency in clinical and surgical pathology in New York and Virginia, he took his first position in Massachusetts.

Dr. Zuber arrived in the Phoenix area in 1964 to join a pathology group that practiced at Memorial and Doctor's Hospital as well as a private lab, Diagnostic Laboratories. He was recruited to Scottsdale Baptist Hospital to become chief pathologist and director of the laboratory. The hospital grew to become Scottsdale Memorial Hospital and eventually Scottsdale Healthcare with three locations.

He recruited talented pathologists to join him in creating a first-rate pathology department. He loved his profession but retired after nearly 30 years of service, looking forward to playing golf and spending time with his six grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, which was always the center of his life. He loved collecting fine wine, and he and his wife put together several diverse art collections over the years. Their latest is a collection of Latin American photography, which was the subject of a retrospective at Phoenix Art Museum in 2004.
