Scottsdale Firefighter Charities raised a record-breaking $100,000-plus at its 27th annual Behind the Flames fundraiser, bringing together community leaders, firefighters and supporters. The event celebrated outstanding service while raising funds to support firefighters and their families and strengthen programs serving people throughout the community. Presented by HonorHealth, the annual gathering recognized the people who serve Scottsdale both on and off duty.

Proceeds help Scottsdale Firefighter Charities provide assistance to firefighters and their families while supporting organizations that serve youth, seniors, families and others in need.

“We’ve seen Behind the Flames grow year after year and raising more than $100,000 is something we’re incredibly proud of,” said Sasha Weller, president of the Scottsdale Firefighters Association. “Every dollar gives us another opportunity to help a firefighter or family who needs support or put resources behind organizations doing important work throughout Scottsdale. Raising that kind of support shows what can happen when this community comes together for people who spend their lives showing up for others.”

The evening honored Scottsdale Firefighter of the Year Rey Igliane for his dedication and service to the Scottsdale Fire Department. Recognized by colleagues for his integrity, dependability and commitment to the job, Igliane received the award for consistently demonstrating the qualities and service it represents.

Four recipients also received C.A.R.E. Awards for their contributions to Scottsdale and communities across Arizona. Longtime Arizona sports journalist and radio personality Dan Bickley was recognized for using his platform to spotlight charitable causes, local heroes and first responders while holding sports figures accountable.

Award-winning journalist Jeremy Duda, author of “Murder in the Fourth Estate,” was also honored, along with George Weisz, a former Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigator who spent years investigating the murder of Arizona Republic journalist Don Bolles and now chairs the board of directors at Scottsdale Community Bank.

Melissa Schalles, executive director of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Association, rounded out the honorees. Under her leadership, the organization has used the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show to support charitable causes throughout the region. KTAR News radio host Jim Sharpe emceed the event, which featured award presentations, remarks from honorees and firefighters, dinner and fundraising in support of Scottsdale Firefighter Charities.

Funds raised through Behind the Flames benefit numerous community organizations and programs, including the EVIT Foundation, Scottsdale Community Partners/Human Services, Scottsdale Food Bank, Jobs for America’s Graduates, the City of Scottsdale Youth Development program, Scottsdale Senior Center, Together Pink Network, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and Vista del Camino Community Center.

The record-setting fundraiser gives Scottsdale Firefighter Charities greater resources to continue supporting local firefighters and their families while investing in organizations that make a difference throughout the community.
