The Joy Bus will celebrate 15 years of serving Valley residents facing cancer at its annual gala on October 30 at the Arizona Biltmore. The evening will recognize the nonprofit’s impact on the community, including the delivery of its 100,000th medically tailored meal, while honoring philanthropists and cancer survivors Derrick and Amy Hall with the Hummingbird Award.

Founded to provide nourishment and human connection to people navigating cancer treatment, The Joy Bus delivers free, chef-inspired meals to individuals who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. Proceeds from the gala will directly support the meal delivery program, helping the organization continue serving people throughout Arizona.

The Hummingbird Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate courage, kindness, generosity and a commitment to helping others. After Derrick’s successful battle with prostate cancer and Amy’s experience as a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, the couple co-founded the Pro-State Foundation to provide resources, awareness and support for individuals and families facing a cancer diagnosis.

Through their advocacy and willingness to share their experiences, the Halls have helped advance conversations about early detection, treatment and survivorship. They are also dedicated community leaders, proud Arizona State University alumni and devoted parents who continue to support charitable initiatives across the state.

“Honoring Derrick and Amy with this year’s Hummingbird Award could not be more fitting. Their unwavering belief in The Joy Bus, along with the incredible support of the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been pivotal to our mission and the immense growth we are experiencing,” The Joy Bus Founder and CEO Jennifer Caraway said. “Simply put, we would not be where we are without them. They have stood beside us since day one, helping The Joy Bus grow from a small grassroots effort into an organization serving thousands of medically tailored meals each month and expanding across Arizona. Their impact is woven into who we are, how far we have come and where we are headed.”

Event Co-chairs Tran Appell and Beth McRae

The Halls said they are honored to be part of the milestone celebration and hope the event will help introduce more people to the organization’s mission.

“This gala is a celebration of the 100,000 nutritional meals delivered to date, but more so, a launch toward the next 100,000 and beyond. The more that we can drive awareness of this powerful and necessary mission, the better,” said Amy and Derrick Hall. “We have been a part of preparing and delivering these heartfelt and difference-making gifts of nourishment, and there is little more rewarding. It is a privilege to play a small part in such a grand movement.”

This year’s gala will be co-chaired by Tran Appell, founder of Axis Employment Services and a longtime Joy Bus supporter, and Beth McRae, CEO of The McRae Agency and a Valley communications and philanthropic leader. Appell and her family have supported the nonprofit since its founding in 2011, while McRae brings more than 30 years of experience in public relations, community engagement and charitable initiatives.

Together, they are leading a committee of 60 women community leaders in support of the event. Guests will hear personal stories from clients and volunteers while enjoying dining, entertainment, and live and silent auctions. For more behind this Frontdoor, visit The Joy Bus.
