Cold Brew Secrets

DrinkWhat’s a coffee lover to do when Arizona’s summer temps hit the 100s?

Phoenix coffee advocate Perry Czopp says cold brew is coffee’s triple threat to our triple digits – a cool drink full of flavor and caffeine. It’s also easy to make at home. In the third session of Czopp’s Knowledge Series on Saturday, June 8, at Crêpe Bar, he will show guests how.

The Knowledge Series are morning coffee “classes” at Tempe’s award-winning Crêpe Bar geared to the layperson interested in learning more about specialty coffee. At each session, guests get hands on experience while learning about a different aspect of coffee, nosh on bites from the restaurant, and – or course – sample different coffees.

On Saturday, June 8, Czopp will share his coffee knowledge on cold brewing – also known as iced coffee or toddy. The beverage just isn’t an icy drink on a hot day. It’s also a way to get sweet and mellow flavors from older beans as well as a stronger caffeine buzz.

Guests will learn how to make cold brew, enjoy coffee-inspired dishes from Crêpe Bar, and get to bottle their own brew to take home.

“Cold brewing is a very different way to think of making coffee,” says Czopp. “There’s absolutely no heat involved. Instead you bring out the flavors from the beans by slowly seeping them overnight. The resulting flavor is sweeter and stronger – and perfect over ice.”

The Coffee Chop “Knowledge Series” is a morning edition of Czopp’s popular Latte Art Throwdowns. While the throwdowns are evening events for the Arizona coffee industry, the Knowledge sessions are designed for the layperson interested in learning more about specialty coffee. Each session covers different aspects of coffee – from how to prepare it at home to learning about different roasts and flavors.

“The mission of The Coffee Chop is to put Phoenix on the coffee map. A big part of that is for people to be able to share the greatness of coffee in their own homes. In the summer, having some cold brew in the fridge is a perfect option.” Czopp explains.

Five dollars of every ticket sale will be donated to the United Food Bank and the Mesa Hydration Donation campaign water drive. Water is an important part of coffee, but even more essential to those in need during the summer. Cold Brewing will be from 8:30 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Crêpe Bar in Tempe.
