Valley Leadership Honors Persons of the Year

Two longtime Valley community members were celebrated March 21 as Valley Leadership’s man and woman of the year at the organization’s 63rd annual luncheon at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown.

 

Former Phoenix City Councilman from 1974 to 1976 Jerry Lewkowitz and Sue Glawe, vice president of community relations for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, won the honor for 2011.

 

Lewkowitz is a lifelong Phoenix resident. A practicing attorney, he and his wife, Andrea, operate Lewkowitz Law Office. Lewkowitz has served as president, chairman, founding officer or board member of the Crisis Nursey, Phoenix Thunderbirds (since 1962), YMCA, Phoenix Zoo, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Campfire Girls, March of Dies, COMPAS, Phoenix Boys Choir, United Way, the Arizona Historical Society and many others. He has also won many significant awards within the Phoenix community.

 

Glawe serves as a board member for Florence Crittenton, the Arizona Educational Foundation and Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. She is the immediate past chairwoman of the US Airways Education Foundation and a member of Charter 100 and the City of Phoenix Police Reserve Foundation. She also works with the Arizona Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Phoenix Indian Center, the Desert Botanical Garden, the Arizona Science Center, YWCA and the Girl Scouts, Arizona Cactus-Pine Council along with numerous charitable organizations.

 

Glawe has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Golden Heart of Business Award from Arizona Woman magazine, the Arizona Women’s Education and Employment “Angel Award,” Valle del Sol’s profiles of success Hispanic leadership honoree and, most recently, the 2012 Tribute to Leadership award from YWCA Maricopa County.
