St. Vincent de Paul Reopens Newly Expanded Urban Farm

Last week St. Vincent de Paul hosted a reopening of the newly expanded and revitalized Rob and Melani Walton Urban Farm, which aims to find a sustainable solution for hunger in Arizona.
“St. Vincent de Paul’s Urban Farm expansion was graciously funded by Rob and Melani Walton,” said program coordinator Nika Forte. “Their generous donation will increase the Urban Farm’s production of fresh, nutritious produce that is harvested and served each day, in our five dining rooms. This renovation also provides beautiful outdoor spaces for workshops, special events, and educational activities for community groups as well as those we serve 365 days-a-year.”
New initiatives include an updated aquaponics system and new public gathering spaces for community classes and demonstrations on important sustainability topics such as composting.
The space, which features new pathways and signage, will provide hundreds of pounds of produce each week that are used in St. Vincent de Paul’s kitchen and are added to food boxes for families in need.
“This is an amazing time at St. Vincent de Paul because this expansion not only transforms the Urban Farm’s physical space, but it also transforms our capacity for community outreach and our ability to increase awareness around environmental sustainability,” said Forte.
