New Trail-Rating System Takes Off

It was late afternoon Wednesday when Chris Nieto and Adair Turner were heading out for a hike up Piestewa Peak in north Phoenix.

 

Nieto, a neurosurgeon, and Turner, a clinical researcher, both 33, are frequent visitors to the park near 24th Street and Lincoln Drive and are avid hikers. They’re comfortable making steep climbs and know the mountain trails in Phoenix well.

 

It’s not the case for many area hikers, including novices and tourists.
