Kicking off the exhibition is an Artist’s Reception slated for 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at the gallery located at 6425 E Thomas Road, Scottsdale, which will feature beverages, hors d’oeuvres and appearances by Davis and Ortega. Davis, whose works have lined the walls of Arizona State University, Lawrence University, the University of Minnesota, the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, and the Tucson Museum of Art, among others, uses algorithmic processes to create abstract art, utilizing geometric structure and color arrangement created through computation and iteration. A graduate of Lawrence University and a recipient of a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the Art Institute of Chicago, Davis is also a two-time textbook author, counting Foundations of Design and Foundations of Color among his book credits.
Ortega, meanwhile, is a minimalist abstract painter and sculptor who creates multidimensional pieces by utilizing ghosted images, rubbings and wood surfaces, among other mediums. The movie The Family Fang, released in 2015 and starring Nicole Kidman, featured Ortega’s work, and his pieces are also currently on display at the Mary Thomas Gallery in Dallas, Texas. Ortega, who holds Bachelor of Arts degrees from North Texas and Texas Tech universities, supplied works for numerous private, public and corporate collections, and his art is also available for viewing as part of the Polsinelli Collection and the Microdwell Exhibition at the iconic Shemer Art Center & Museum.
Made possible through the Walter Art Project, an innovative community of artisans and visionaries who strive to spark creativity through unique experiences, Stratums showcases the unique contributions of these two artists in a single innovative, awe-inspiring exhibition.
