20th Anniversary Awards Luncheon Honors Maria Shriver, Bruce Arians and Kendis Muscheid
Arizona Foundation for Women’s 20th Anniversary Awards Luncheon honored Maria Shriver, Bruce Arians and Kendis Muscheid. The moving April 14 event at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa raised approximately $300,000 for AFW programming and sustainability.
Prior to lunch, guests at the event had the opportunity to purchase mystery boxes and enjoy the silent auction. All mystery boxes were priced at $100, and each had a minimum value of $100. They went fast, selling out in just 30 minutes. Two boxes contained two international roundtrip tickets on any Southwest Airlines flight.
The Marilyn R. Seymann Award was presented to Kendis Muscheid as a nonprofit champion and attorney with Ballard Spahr. Maria Shriver received the Sandra Day O’Connor Lifetime Achievement Award. Shriver spoke of her longtime relationship with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who was seated with her at the Founder’s Table. In her address she connected with the audience with relatable, humorous stories about Justice O’Connor as her mentor. Lin Sue Cooney, the luncheon emcee, interviewed Shriver onstage, where she spoke not only about her relationship with Justice O’Connor but also about being a mother and the importance of that role. She also spoke about her famous family and the values they instilled in her. One of her desires, she shared, is to eradicate Alzheimer’s Disease, which took her father and which affects more women than men in the U.S.
The final award was given to Bruce Arians, head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Arians received the Voice of Women Award. In his touching acceptance, he expressed what an honor it was to receive the recognition.
Jinger Richardson and Deborah Bateman co-chaired the luncheon.
