$1 Million Raised for Scholarships at Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Dinner

Last month, more than 500 community members attended the Eighth Annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Arizona Awards Dinner at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge, raising more than $1 million to provide college scholarships to children of Marines and Navy Corpsman.
“The heart of this event is to honor the service and commitment of Marines and to provide quality education for their children so that they can go forth and positively impact communities just like their parent(s) did,” said Lt. Gen. Robert Ruark, president & CEO of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
More than thirty percent of the Arizona scholarship recipients attended the dinner, which paid tribute to former founder and CEO of Discount Tire , the late Bruce Halle, and fallen Phoenix marine Lance Corporal Jacob Hug.
It was announced that the Semper Fidelis award in Arizona will now be named in honor of Halle and the Jacob A. Hug Memorial scholarship was fully endowed to provide scholarships to future generations of students, while honoring Hug’s legacy.
The event was chaired by Dave English, Kathleen Winn and Elisabeth Wisthoff.
Karen Kelly was the military guest of honor. Honorary chairs Stevie and Karl Eller and Diane and Dan Nelson were honored with the Bruce T. Halle Semper Fidelis Award.
Sue Glawe, vice president of community relations at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, was honored with the Service Above Self Award.
Mike Broomhead of KFYI served as the event emcee.
