United Blood Services Has Supply for Vegas Victims, Encourages Ongoing Donations
United Blood Services has reported that it has enough of a blood supply in Las Vegas to meet the needs of all victims of Sunday night’s tragic mass shooting — but there are still ways to help in the long term.
United Blood Services and other blood-donation organizations saw a huge uptick in blood donations in response to the tragedy, providing them with enough to meet current needs. And since blood donations may only be kept for 42 days total, United Blood Services is asking those interested in donating to make appointments over the coming weeks and months.
In a press release sent out by the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, Dennis Todd, Chairman of the AABB Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism Task Force, said donors are still encouraged to give over time.
“U.S. blood banks currently have enough blood to meet the immediate medical needs of patients being treated in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Las Vegas,” he said. “The blood community is committed to ensuring a coordinated response to the affected areas and will continue to provide updates should additional blood supplies be required.”
United Blood Services is part of a multi-state system of blood centers that work together to ensure blood is available when and where it’s needed most. Individuals who are as young as 16 years of age (with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood.
Donors may schedule a donation appointment by calling 877-UBS-HERO (877-827-4376) or by visiting bloodhero.com.
