Scottsdale Students Enjoy Mock Auctions & More During Arizona Auction Week

Each January, thousands of automotive enthusiasts descend on Arizona to get their classic car fix, and last week, more than 100 students from Scottsdale’s Tavan Elementary School got a crash course in the inner-workings of the auction and collector car marketplace.

Hagerty’s Test Garage, which seeks to ensure the future of the classic car industry by generating interest in it among younger generations, visited the elementary school Wednesday, Jan. 18, giving students a chance to participate in a mock auction and learn about automotive restoration, racing history and more.

“Tavan Elementary is thrilled that our fifth-grade students have had the opportunity to participate in Hagerty’s Test Garage for the third consecutive year,” said Tavan Elementary School Teacher Shelly Rose. “Most of our students would never dream of seeing classic cars up close, let alone being able to sit in one. This is the highlight of their year.”

Students also had a chance to showcase their own artwork depicting “Why I’m Excited to Drive,” with 11-year-old Ashley Melgar taking home the top prize. “I am excited to drive because you can go to different places all over the world and do fun road trips,” Melgar said. “When I hear the word driving, I think of adventure.”

That’s exactly what Hagerty’s Test Garage was aiming for when it began partnering with local schools to expose even more students to classic car-related experiences.

“Arizona Auction Week attracts enthusiasts from all over the world, which is why it’s the perfect opportunity for Hagerty to engage local students who might not otherwise have a chance to take part in the automotive action,” said Hagerty’s Youth Program Coordinator Rachel Ventimiglia. “We host programs like Hagerty Test Garage so we can provide opportunities for the next generation to get excited about cars and driving.”
