14,000 Walk to Help JDRF Raise $1M for Diabetes
JDRF’s Desert Southwest Chapter raised nearly $1 million and boasted nearly 14,000 participants at the 27th Annual One Walk on April 29. JDRF, which is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research, will use the funds to continue research that they hope will ultimately put an end to the disease.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled at the success this impactful event achieved this year,” said JDRF Executive Director Paula Boca-Bommarito. “Thanks to the incredible supporters of JDRF One Walk, our community and generous sponsors, JDRF is able to direct more funding toward important T1D research for the 1.25 million people with this disease.”
According to JDRF, more than 532,600 Arizonans, and 1.25 million Americans suffer from diabetes.
Nearly 200 JDRF One Walks take place across the country each year, raising over $68 million for research annually, and making it the most powerful peer-to-peer fundraising programs for type one diabetes in the world.
The Desert Southwest Chapter’s walk ended inside of Sloan Park in Mesa. After the race, children had the opportunity to run the bases and experience a kids’ zone, and families enjoyed live entertainment, food and a vendor village.
This year, the JDRF Desert Southwest Chapter also hosted the inaugural Rock & Run 5k, a nighttime run, which was attended by 500 advocates. Plans for the event to take place next are already in the works.
