T.S. Monk Celebrates Father’s 100th Birthday with Jazz
T.S. Monk, son of the late jazz musician Thelonious Monk known as the “high priest of be-bop,” will celebrate his father’s legacy and 100th birthday with a jazz performance entitled “Monk on Monk: A Centennial Celebration of Thelonious Monk.”
The concert will take place at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 14 as part of Monk’s commemorative tour.
T.S. Monk, who previously fronted an R&B band in the 1980s, will duplicate the big-band instrumentation of his father’s New York Town Hall appearance in 1959, which was recorded on “The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall.”
Popular songs such as “Monk’s Mood,” “Friday the 13th” and “Round Midnight” will be performed on the piano, bass, drums, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, alto sax, tenor sax and baritone sax, likely with drum solos performed by Monk.
Monk is also a music educator and founder of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Washington, D.C. He has aided in creating a variety of programs that sponsor music education and support after-school athletics.
