Migration Expressed Through Cars and Tattoos
Contemporary Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero will be in Phoenix for an artist residency April 3-10. Her approach to art focuses on migration and mobility through current symbols and everyday modern rituals of culture and global consumption like cars and car parts, tattoos, illuminated sculls, urban signage, and other 3-D mixed media.
During her Phoenix residency, Romero will present a variety of free public programs, including a lecture at the Phoenix Art Museum on Wednesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. She will also be collaborating with local artists and community members to create site-specific projects focused on the modification and deconstruction of cars to help draw attention to the current social and cultural topics facing the world today. Romero’s residency is supported through CALA Alliance and AZ ArtWorker, a program of the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which focuses on local, artistic talent with an emphasis on Arizona’s relationship to the Americas.
Romero currently lives and works in Mexico City and has held exhibitions of her work over the past 15 years in México, the United States and Europe. A piece of her art can also be viewed at the Phoenix Art Museum. www.betsabeeromero.com.
