Heard Museum to Open Largest Contemporary Exhibit in a Decade

The Heard Museum will exhibit its largest concentration of contemporary work in a decade with “Dear Listener: Works by Nicholas Galanin” opening on May 4 and running through September.
The exhibit is a mid-career retrospective of the provocative artist, exploring themes of identity in both Indigenous and American contexts. It will be installed in the recently opened Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Grand Gallery, the Dennis Lyon Family Crossroads Gallery, and the Freeman Gallery.
The exhibit was curated by the museum’s new fine art curator Erin Joyce and will feature more than 10,000 square feet of Galanin’s work including video, sculpture, performance art, fashion and more.
“This exhibition, for me, is the culmination of more than five years of research and work with the artist,” said Joyce. “Galanin’s work is unabashedly beautiful and unflinching in its interrogation of colonial power structures and issues affecting Indigenous communities, and communities more broadly.’’
The Heard Museum will celebrate the opening of the exhibition on First Friday with a special event entitled “Not a Block Party” from 6 to 11 p.m. The event will feature performances by Shabazz Palaces, Indian Agent, and Heebie Jeebies.
