Crowdsourcing Call for Community Garden
Keep Phoenix Beautiful, a nonprofit organization and affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, has launched a crowd fundraiser for a new community garden.
The crowd funding goal for the new Keep Phoenix Beautiful Community Garden is $25,000, which Keep American Beautiful and Lowe’s will match, bringing the total raised to invest in sustainable practices in Central Phoenix and nationwide to $50,000.
“This new garden is a place where residents and visitors can come and learn about urban sustainability,” said Tom Waldeck, president and CEO of Keep Phoenix Beautiful. “Each donation received provides another person the opportunity to learn more about gardening, recycling, water use, and the beautification of our city. We’re excited to continue growing these efforts today and for years to come and are thankful for the opportunity provided by Keep America Beautiful and Lowe’s to potentially double the funds raised via our crowdsourcing campaign.”
The new garden will be at 18th Avenue and Pierson Street and will give community members the opportunity to receive a hands-on education about urban agriculture and sustainability.
Money raised will fund expenses such as fencing, utilities, irrigation, watering, gardening supplies and infrastructure as well as things like Polycarbonate Sheets for a greenhouse, and other new features such as an aquaponics station, recycle and composting station, children’s area and more.
The previous garden, PHX renews, was opened in 2011 and transformed the 15-acre lot into a sustainable garden with community partners and a network of volunteer. Keep Phoenix Beautiful plans to continue these efforts at the new location.
The final campaign party celebrating Keep Phoenix Beautiful’s 35th anniversary will take place in August.
