Magic and the Brain

Could it be magic?

Dr. Susana Martinez-Conde thinks so. The researcher, director of the Laboratory of Visual Neuroscience at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Dr. Stephen Macknik, director of the Laboratory of Behavioral Neurophysiology, have teamed up with some of the world’s greatest magicians to learn more about the tricks our brains play on us.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Barrow Neurological Institute, the doctors and magicians presented “Magic and the Brain” to an appreciative audience at Phoenix Theatre on Sept. 17. The evening, which also raised funds for Barrow, gave attendees a behind-the scenes look at the sleight of hand magicians use and insight into why it works and why it is important. The show featured renowned magicians Mac King and James Randi.

Dr. Peter Nakaji gave the opening remarks, and Tara Hitchcock served as emcee for the evening. Her stepson, Dylan Francis, has been a Barrow patient and shared his appreciation from the podium. Proceeds benefit Barrow Neurological Institute.
