Heart Ball Kickoff
An enthusiastic Heart Ball committee convened Valentine's Day for breakfast and a spring fashion show at Saks Fifth Avenue. True Food, a Fox restaurant, served a heart-healthy breakfast.
Larry Buchanan, Saks general manager, welcomed the women to the store, and continued his Valentine tradition of offering a quote about love. His selection was a quote from Franklin P. Jones: “Love doesn’t make the world go ’round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.”
Lynne Love, 2012 Heart Ball chair (and the 53rd Phoenix chair), also shared a favorite quote, hers from Buddha: “A generous heart, kind speech and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.”
Love praised the Heart Ball committee for their willingness to serve, calling the women the “best sorority in town.”
Sam Fox, founder of Fox Restaurant Concepts, shared with the committee his personal experience with heart disease. Two years ago at age 40, he woke up at 3 a.m. with chest pains. He drove himself, his wife needing to stay home with their two young children. His condition was identified as early signals of a heart attack, and the physician put a stent in his heart. The episode made him much more aware of the necessity to eat correctly and lead a healthy lifestyle. Since that time, he has lost 20 pounds.
The morning’s runway-style show featured spring fashions by Oscar de la Renta.
Following the runway show, the women were invited to shop, with 5 percent of their purchases made with their Saks Fifth Avenue cards being donated to the American Heart Association on behalf of the Phoenix Heart Ball.
