Phoenix Rescue Mission, a leading Valley nonprofit that provides life-transforming solutions to persons facing hunger and homelessness, has launched its “Homeless for the Holidays”campaign.

The campaign runs through Dec. 31 and aims to ensure the Valley’s homeless and disadvantaged do not go hungry this holiday season. Additionally, the campaign will feature several holiday events exclusively for poverty-stricken families, providing them a brief escape from the hardships of everyday life.

“Arizona ranks among the worst states in the nation for poverty and homelessness, with more than 25,000 people in Maricopa County alone who have no place to call home,” Phoenix Rescue Mission Chief Growth Officer Nicole Peña said. “The holidays can be especially difficult for those who are living on the streets, as many are estranged from their families and become even more distressed. We are asking the community to come together in support of our homeless population and disadvantaged neighbors during this time of need, so no one is forgotten this holiday season.”

During the three-month campaign, the Mission aspires to serve at least 100,000 meals, deliver more than 1,000 turkeys, and provide a special Christmas celebration to more than 1,000 children in working-poor families.

“The challenges linked to homelessness become even greater around the holidays. As families across the Valley prepare their celebratory feasts, purchase gifts and spend time with their loved ones, a large population of Valley residents are left struggling for survival,” Peña said. “Homelessness is increasingly affecting women and children in families, so it has become even that much more important to take action and support our neighbors in need, even if it’s just to help them celebrate the holidays like the rest of us.”

Phoenix Rescue Mission is in need of food, water, hygiene products, new socks, sleeping bags, volunteers, toys and monetary donations to support the Homeless for the Holidays campaign.
