McGroders’ Car Donation Gives Childhelp Big Boost to Fight Child Abuse

Childhelp, the largest organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect as well as at-risk children, received a “muscular” boost recently from prominent Phoenix trial attorney Patrick and Susie McGroder.

The McGroders donated a 1970 Chevy Camaro Z28 to the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale, which crossed the block with a final bid of $130,000.

That money will go toward Childhelp’s lifesaving programs. Founded in 1959 by Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, Childhelp is one of the largest and oldest non-profit organizations dedicated to the intervention, treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Michael Medoro, Childhelp’s chief development officer, who took to the stage with the Childhelp team at the auction after the final bid was made, said: “Generous and caring hearts like that of Patrick McGroder and Craig Jackson are what made Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017 so magical for Childhelp and the children we serve. $130,000 will go a long way toward bringing healing care to children victimized and at-risk of child abuse.”

Some notable statistics on child abuse:

  • Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children (a referral can include multiple children).
  • Individuals who reported six or more adverse childhood experiences had an average life expectancy two decades shorter than those who reported none.
  • In 2014, state agencies identified an estimated 1,580 children who died as a result of abuse and neglect — between four and five children a day.

“Childhelp advocates on behalf of children suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect,” said McGroder. “It was my pleasure to support such an important cause and I’m thankful to be able to do so through Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale.”
