20 Years of Art of Fashion

Neiman Marcus celebrates 20 years of

The Art of Fashion

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Art of Fashion

campaign with photographer Nadav Kander. Kander

brings his internationally acclaimed talent for portraiture

and memorable brand imagery to this season’s campaign.

This fall’s Art of Fashion features a variety of captivating images that both showcase fashion and celebrate the range of character using 18 different models. In celebration of this anniversary, the September issue of the book has been completely transformed into a special edition – the entire issue is The Art of Fashion.

In addition, the double gatefold cover features a unique piece of art – a collage feateuring images from past Art of Fashion campaigns, the first of which was shot by Richard Avedon. For the inside of the book, 10 different Art of Fashion alumni photographers have photographed this fall’s coveted collection of apparel, accessories, jewelry and cosmetics.

Nadav Kander, photographer, director and artist, is based in London. He is one of the most sought-after portrait photographer working today. His photos are part of the public collection at the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Since fashion design is an artistic expression of a designer and then, the individual who ends up wearing the clothes, our approach was one of portraiture for punctuating the 20th anniversary of The Art of Fashion campaign” said Georgia Christensen, executive creative director, Neiman Marcus. “In doing so, we chose world renowned portrait photographer Nadav Kander to create 28 portraits of 18 different models. As one of the most highly regarded photographers of our time, his work is collected around the world and because of this; we thought he was the perfect choice for this campaign.”

"I like my work to ask questions of people," says Nadav Kander. "That's the thing that makes you stay with a picture or a painting or a play – if it somehow challenges you, then you remain interested."

For the Fall 2014 AOF portfolio – 15 models in 31 exquisitely crafted designer looks – Kander envisioned a "visually uncomfortable" false–perspective set and "a gentle idea that nobody's feet ever touch the floor." The Tel Aviv–born Londoner is widely recognized for portraiture (Prince Charles for the cover of Time, Radiohead and Paul McCartney for Rolling Stone, Obama and his inaugural cabinet for The New York Times Magazine), landscapes, and photo essays. Yet he also embraces the originality and culturally important messages fashion delivers. In the end, he insists, "Whether it's a girl in a dress or a concrete bridge in a sunset makes no difference. It's the feeling that matters."
