Happy Birthday, Luka!

2014 MAY BE LUKA'S LAST FULL YEAR AT PHOENIX ZOO

Have you seen Luka, Phoenix Zoo’s adorable

1-year-old bear cub?

Luka is a very rare Andean bear, a species that is endangered in its native homelands of Central and South America. Luka has grown from the size of a stick of butter to an 80-pound bundle of energy and curiosity.

Phoenix Zoo has joined forces to fight the uphill battle against Andean bear extinction, and Luka is a success story. He is one of only five Andean bears that have been born in North America in the last several years. Around the age of two, Luka will find a home at another AZA-accredited zoo to be part of a breeding program to help save this endangered species. He is just one of the amazing animals you will see and enjoy when you visit the Zoo.
