Hands-on at Phoenix Zoo

Glass handprint tiles create modern exhibit at Zoo entrance

The Phoenix Zoo Auxiliary will dedicate the first donor wall of its kind in the country at the entrance of the Zoo on Wed., Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. Made up of glass tiles cast from handprints from the public, nearly 200 handprints already adorn the modern exhibit, and there is room for hundreds more from Zoo supporters.

“The tiles are showcased in a premier location at the entrance of the Zoo,” says Carole Minor, auxiliary president. “These unique and beautiful tiles stand as a symbol of support by the many guests, members and friends of the Phoenix Zoo.”

At the dedication ceremony, Minor will present the wall to the Phoenix Zoo and co-chairs of the project, Susan Telesko and Jan Binder about the fundraising project. Artist Chris Klein will be on hand to discuss the concept and creation of the design. Bert Castro, president and CEO of the Phoenix Zoo, will be placed in glass and etched with the name of the donor, and finished with a color. The proceeds from each hand tile go directly to support the nonprofit zoo.
