Grant Provides for Shade

Devereux Arizona receives

funds to buy shade structure

for basketball court

Devereux Arizona was recently named a recipient of a $75,000 grant from The Finish Line Youth Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase a much-needed shade structure to cover the outdoor basketball court on Devereux’s residential treatment center campus in Scottsdale. Construction of the shade structure is scheduled to begin this winter.

“The need for shade structures is so important for the children we serve,” says Lane Barker, executive director of Devereux Arizona. “Sports are a large part of our recreational programming, and our youth need to be safe and shaded from the direct sunlight due to medications they may take. Participation in sports promotes healthy development, teaches teamwork, builds social skills and teaches coping skills that help youth learn how to handle conflict, frustration and anger.”

The skills taught at Devereux help youth at the residential treatment center successfully transition back to their homes, schools and community.

Devereux Arizona’s residential treatment center is a 48-bed facility that helps youth ages 5 to 17 with emotional, behavioral and/or substance abuse challenges.
