Florence Crittenton Awarded $100K from Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation awarded Florence Crittenton, a 120-year-old nonprofit that helps foster the recovery of young women who have experienced neglect, homelessness, poverty and drug abuse, with a Ken Kendrick Grand Slam Award that included a $100,000 grant.

“We are honored to be a Ken Kendrick Grand Slam Award recipient,” said Florence Crittenton CEO Dr. Kellie M. Warren. “The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation receives hundreds of submissions for this opportunity, and it is an incredibly humbling experience to be one of the few organizations selected. We are overjoyed to be awarded these funds to change the lives of hundreds of girls and young women.”

The grant will provide Florence Crittenton the ability to purchase three new vans that will help provide the girls and young women in the agency’s group home with transportation to doctors appointments.

The vans will also provide students enrolled at the Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona to get to and from college visits, sports practices and games and to other educational activities.

“Florence Crittenton is an important partner of our community and we are happy to provide much-needed funding through our Ken Kendrick Grand Slam Award program,” said Arizona Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall. “The D-backs have enthusiastically supported Florence Crittenton throughout the years and admire their much-needed impact. With this donation, we are pleased to be able to ensure safe travel for girls within the Therapeutic Group Home and Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona programs.”

The Florence Crittenton Therapeutic Group Home provides a safe, home-like environment for nearly 175 girls from ages 10 to 18-years-old. In the program, girls learn how to overcome trauma.

The agency also holds the charter for the state’s first and only public, single-gender preparatory school, the Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona, for high-school aged girls.

“Transportation through these three passenger vans is critical in the overall health and well-being of our students and residential girls,” said Dr. Warren. “These vans will enrich their lives by providing them with activities and resources to help them create and continue healthy and active lifestyles.”
