Trash Takes Front Row Seat at Charity Fashion Show

Soroptimist International of Phoenix, a nonprofit who works to improve the lives of women through economic and social empowerment programs, hosted the Many Women, Many Dreams event on Saturday, April 8 at the Irish Cultural Center to raise money to provide grants and scholarships. The event featured the “Trash-2-Fashion” runway show and performances by The Screamin’ Javelinas, Claude Mattox and Scott Henrich.
The “Trash-2-Fashion” Runway show required that contestants create ensembles that expressed a dream or desire of the model, designer or the award recipient for less than $100 and with 75 percent of the outfit’s materials being recycled. In addition to the outfit, contestants were asked to create at least two accessories with recycled materials. Judges included Sarah Curley, a retired bankruptcy judge, juried artist and photographer, and a member of SI Phoenix; Jenesis Lafocarde, an award-winning fashion designer and CEO of Woman’s Touch Apparel, and more; and Samantha Bostwick, a Theatre Arts Instructor, Technical Director and Stage Management Supervisor at Arizona School for the Arts.
Awards included “Best Expression of Design Concept,” “Most Original Design,” “Best Construction/ Workmanship,” and “Most Creative Use of Materials,” and the audience voted title of “Audience Favorite.” Each winner received a $500 cash prize.
