Modern Phoenix Week, April 10 – 19, 2015

It's time to celebrate local midcentury modernism. The Modern Marketplace, to be held at the Scottsdale Center of the Performing Arts, will feature free events, including: a marketplace with various local vendors in the architecture and design field, a panel discussion about the importance of preserving homes in Haver neighborhoods and a workshop and library to discover and explore information about midcentury neighborhoods and homes.

Modern Phoenix Week will include several free and ticketed events in a variety of venues during April 10-19, including a tour of the Valley Ho Hotel, a mixer at Design Within Reach and two presentations at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts by architects and designers.

Ticketed events: a film about Architect Donald Wexler presented by No Festival Required and an entertaining retro slideshow presentation about Arizona by the Ambassador of Americana, Charles Phoenix.

The one-man fusion of theatre and stand-up starring Peter Story and based on the New York Times #1 best-selling book of the last decade by John Gray. Moving swiftly through a series of vignettes, the show covers everything from dating to marriage. After beginning in Paris in 2007, the show has been seen by more than one million people around Europe. It debuted in the United States in February 2013 in Raleigh, North Carolina and will be playing to audiences around the United States and Canada throughout the year.

As an artist, Andy Warhol’s unique visual language tells the story of an artist fascinated with the phenomena of fame and celebrity. Working with restricted formal elements – a limited palette of yellows, oranges, fuchsias and deep purple as wellas a composition of calculated, repeating forms – artist James Marshall generates a visual pulse in SMoCA Lounge. His energetic painting takes its chromatic cue from the intense heat and light of Arizona and the sharp geometric radiation of that light through the rectangular clerestory window in the northeast corner of the Lounge.
