EXPERIENCE POLYNESIAMusical Instrument Museum

Hula dancers, ukulele jam sessions, and unique flavors bring Polynesia to life at MIM this weekend.
Kick off the summer season with a celebration of Pacific island music and culture during Experience Polynesia. Enjoy traditional and modern hula performances and stories, along with dance lessons from Halau Hula Napuaokalei’ilima dancers. Discover Hawaii’s indigenous musical instruments with Hawaiian cultural expert B. Ka’imiloa Chrisman and join Patrick Inouye and Paul Taylor for a ukulele demonstration. Visit the Oceania Gallery to learn more about the instruments and traditions of the Polynesian islands.
Guests can also make their own ulÄ«‘ulÄ« rattle, which is used in Hawaiian dance. Face painting and MIM’s photo booth with costumes and props will add to the fun. Café Allegro will offer a menu of Polynesian cuisine, serving Tahitian fish soup, Hawaiian-seasoned roasted pig with sweet potato, shoyu chicken with pineapple-spiked fried rice, and banana bread pudding from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The ASU Art Museum presents two concurrent solo exhibitions of work by artist Pablo Helguera, both of which will open March 21, 2014. Pablo Helguera: Librería Donceles and Pablo Helguera: Chrestomathy, curated by Julio César Morales, will be the first presentation outside of the East Coast of this new work by Helguera, a world-renowned visual and performance artist whose work weaves together personal and historical narratives in the context of socially engaged art and language.

Phoenix Art Museum is honored to be the only West Coast venue of Hollywood Costume, a ground breaking exhibition that celebrates and explores costume design as a key component of cinema storytelling. Arriving in Phoenix from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, this major multimedia exhibition explores the essentials of costume design and illuminates the costume designer’s creative process, bringing together more than 100 of the world’s most iconic costumes from a century of filmmaking.
