GERTRUDE'S INNOVATES AS NEW CHEF EMPHASIZES FLAVORS OF SUMMER

Gertrude’s, the full-service restaurant at the Desert Botanical Garden, has an entirely new menu for summer. Under the direction of Executive Chef Matthew Taylor, Gertrude’s summer menu is bursting with heirloom tomatoes, English peas, asparagus, local corn, melons, peaches, lemons and unexpected items like prickly pear, oysters and poutine (a French-Canadian version of fries and gravy).

Gertrude’s showcases local ingredients from artisans and farmers, herbs and vegetables from the restaurant’s onsite plot and prickly pear from the surrounding grounds.

Taylor has tapped his Canadian roots and experience cooking in the South to creaete a flavorful, flexible summer menu that will capitalize on the season’s growing cycles.

“This spring I immersed myself in Gertrude’s bustling kitchen and imagined how I would reinvent the menu come summer, “ reflects Chef Taylor. “Even the most successful restaurants can become lackluster if the kitchen doesn’t continue to innovate. My goal is to update the menu frequently to keep it interesting and timely.”

Alan ‘Skip’ and Chantal Hause, owners of Fabulous Food Fine Catering and Events, are Gertrude’s proprietors. The company has been a fixture in Arizona catering and food service since 1996 and has been responsible for the daily operation of the Garden's Patio Cafe since 2006. A preferred caterer for clients hosting events onsite, the company is responsible for food service at Las Noches de las Luminarias, the Music in the Garden concert series and at the Fabulous Fall Festivals. It also operates the Lab Café at the Arizona Science Center.

Gertrude’s offers Garden members and the general public a seasonal experience with top-quality food, libations and service. Garden admission is not required to dine at Gertrude’s.
