Ballet Arizona celebrates the great master George Balanchine,

who defined and created American ballet.

This year's program features works from three different decades.

Ballet Arizona’s annual celebration of George Balanchine this year features works from three different decades:

Allegro Brillante – According to Balanchine himself, this work, with its vigorous pace and precision timing, “contains everything I know about classical ballet in 13 minutes.”

Stravinsky Violin Concerto – With a dynamic score, this ballet is comprised of two central pas de deux: contrasting tender and romantic with angular and modern.

La Sonnambula – The dark, mysterious tale of the beautiful Sleepwalker who entrances a poet with tragic consequences.

Ballet Arizona and The Phoenix Symphony pay

tribute to the work of legendary choreographer

George Balanchine and celebrate the West.

Choreographer George Balanchine, one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century, set the bar for his protégé Ib Andersen (Ballet Arizona's artistic director) who brings together three works for this All Balanchine program.

Episodes, the most avant-garde of Balanchine's work, danced to a moody score by Webern, is largely resistant to fantasy but invokes a world of possibility—for us and for the dancers. The Arizona premiere of Walpurgisnacht fills the stage with feminine charm and passion. The finale of the program is Western Symphony, a joyous ballet based on traditional western songs featuring frisky cowgirls and lonesome cowpokes. All three works together are a compelling collection of ballet's possibilities and exemplify the incredible range of George Balanchine's work.

Ib Andersen is a one of the few remaining direct links to Balanchine, dancing as the legend's protégé when he joined New York City Ballet in 1980. Given his virtuosity and close work with the master, Andersen is now one of a handful of artists worldwide authorized by The Balanchine Trust to stage Balanchine's masterpieces.
