International Jazz Day at CityScape

Downtown Phoenix joins more than 196 global International Jazz Day celebrations on April 30, the date officially designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate jazz and the role it plays in uniting people in all corners of the world. The free outdoor concert at CityScape features world-renowned jazz saxophonist Azar Lawrence, New Orleans jazz vocalist, and Phoenix native Nayo Jones, and an all-star lineup of local, national and international jazz artists.

International Jazz Day at The Nash 

For International Jazz Day, The Nash joins centennial events occurring all around the globe to celebrate the legendary Billy Strayhorn. The pianist, arranger and composer and long-time collaborator with Duke Ellington, Strayhorn is best known for his classics, Lush LifeTake The ‘A’ Train and Chelsea Bridge. The 20 piece Sonoran Serenade Big Band, led by Mike Crotty, performs the best of Strayhorn for an all-out, blow-out, Big Band BASH for the grand finale of April’s festivities.

Join Maestro Tito Muñoz and his convincing musicianship on the podium in an evening of beautiful and diverse choral repertoire with The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and the world-renowned Phoenix Boys Choir. The evening begins with Vaughan Williams’ Magnificat, a lyrical expression of joy and thanksgiving. The evening continues with Brahms’ Schicksalslied or “Song of Destiny,” which explores the competing existence of deities and mortals. The evening concludes with both choirs singing Kodály’s rarely performed Psalmus hungaricus, a bombastic and defiant work based on scriptures’ Psalm 55 to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of Buda and Pest in Hungary.

Working with restricted formal elements – a limited palette of yellows, oranges, fuchsias and deep purple as wellas a composition of calculated, repeating forms – artist James Marshall generates a visual pulse in SMoCA Lounge. His energetic painting takes its chromatic cue from the intense heat and light of Arizona and the sharp geometric radiation of that light through the rectangular clerestory window in the northeast corner of the Lounge.

Armstrong-Prior is both a fine arts printing studio and an art consulting organization. After many years of print projects, Armstrong-Prior has built an impressive archive of contemporary prints and the ASU Art Museum is very fortunate to have received this archive as a gift from John and Joan.
