SCOTTSDALE CULINARY 

FESTIVAL

presented by Scottsdale League for the Arts

 

This year is the 37th anniversary of the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, the longest running event of its type in the nation. The Festival has grown to a community favorite hosting over 35,000 guests, 20 events, 100 restaurants, dozens of top chefs and countless fine wine and spirit selections. 

The six-day festival offers a diverse menu of luxurious dinners, themed cocktail parties and a signature event, the Great Arizona Picnic, featuring 50 restaurants, chef demonstrations, live bands and specialty tasting venues. 

The festival is the primary fundraiser for the Scottsdale League for the Arts, whose members and staff work all year to present the festival. The League’s mission is to support artists, art programs, and arts education through fundraising and special events. Since 2002, the League has donated over $4 million to arts organizations in Arizona.

Vincent Gardner was born in Chicago in 1972 and was raised in Hampton, Virginia. After singing, playing piano, violin, saxophone, and French horn at an early age, he decided on the trombone at age 12. Gardner is featured on a number of notable recordings and has recorded five CDs as a leader for Steeplechase Records. He has performed with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Bobby McFerrin, The Saturday Night Live Band  and many others.

Award-winning actor Sam Primack (13-years-old) takes the lead as Flat Stanley, a boy who is flattened in his sleep by a bulletin board, but awakens to discover he can now travel by mail. The cast consists of 18 actors, ages 12 to 16, who sing and dance their way through this musical based on the children's book "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown.

As an artist, Andy Warhol’s unique visual language tells the story of an artist fascinated with the phenomena of fame and celebrity. This exhibition features Warhol’s depictions of the persona that forever embedded celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Sylvester Stallone and Prince – to name a few – into America’s cultural conscience as well as several of his self-portraits including silkscreen works, Polaroids of the artist in drag, and family photographs of a young Warhol.

Luis began developing his interest in photography by studying well known photographer, Jack Stuler, while attending the College of Architecture at Arizona State University. Working with restricted formal elements – a limited palette of yellows, oranges, fuchsias and deep purple as wellas a composition of calculated, repeating forms – artist James Marshall generates a visual pulse in SMoCA Lounge. His energetic painting takes its chromatic cue from the intense heat and light of Arizona and the sharp geometric radiation of that light through the rectangular clerestory window in the northeast corner of the Lounge.

John Armstrong and Joan Prior, through their firm Armstrong-Prior, Inc., have a rich history of working with local and international contemporary artists, donors, collectors, community organizations and museums. Armstrong-Prior is both a fine arts printing studio and an art consulting organization. After many years of print projects, Armstrong-Prior has built an impressive archive of contemporary prints and the ASU Art Museum is very fortunate to have received this archive as a gift from John and Joan.

The Desert Botanical Garden presents new works by world-renowned artists Philip and Matt Moulthrop. The exhibition features a collection of turned wood that reveals the inherent beauty of trees and shrubs native to Arizona. Woodturning has been a Moulthrop family legacy for three generations and their pieces are immediately recognizable by their distinct contemporary forms. You can find their work in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, the American Craft Museum of New York, and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
