Legends of Charity

Legends of Charity benefit dinner has become a

cornerstone event for the Super Bowl

Besides battling it out on the field, major sporting events bring people together for general camaraderie, and often, to benefit great causes. This year, before Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, sports heavy hitters will come together on Thurs., Jan. 29, for the 10th Annual Legends for Charity Dinner benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The dinner will be held at the NFL headquarters hotel, the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.

Events like this raise hope and funds for thousands of children, and their families, affected by childhood cancer every year, including many local families.

Back in 2001, Nicky Mailliard, 10, of Scottsdale, who was otherwise a normal, healthy child, began vomiting, having headaches and trouble seeing. After an MRI, Nicky was diagnosed with a lemon-sized brain tumor.

After exhausting her options in Arizona, his mother, Lisa, believed there must be something more she could do for her child. She researched online and found St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a unique hospital that is on the cutting edge of research and treatment for catastrophic illnesses. Nicky spent three years at St. Jude and his family never paid a dime for treatment, travel expenses or anything else related to his time at the hospital.

Unfortunately, Nicky’s life was cut short at 13, but he was given a fighting chance because of research and care instituted at the hospital. Many other children and families out there are going through similar circumstances to those the Maillards had to endure. But because of St. Jude, a place where no family is turned away or ever receives a bill, there is hope in curing these diseases.

In 2005, the Legends for Charity dinner honored iconic broadcaster Pat Summerall for his more than 50 years of contributions to the NFL. Since 2006, the Pat Summerall Award has been presented to individuals who have shown the same character, integrity and leadership, in their careers and lives, as the late Pat Summerall. In addition to raising funds for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, The Legends for Charity event, which has become one of the cornerstone events for the Super Bowl, recognizes an outstanding national broadcaster for his or her significant contributions to the field of sports. This year, veteran sports broadcaster Jim Nantz will present the award to Joe Buck, lead play-by-play broadcaster for FOX Sports. Individual tickets for the event are $200.
