StarShine Tribute Dinner

2nd Annual Boots & Stars Tribute

Dinner at Phoenix charter school

StarShine Academy hosted its 12th Annual 11 Days of Peace and Sustainability Ceremony at the local Phoenix charter school founded by Trish McCarty. The morning paid tribute to the events of 9/11 through a tribute song by the school’s students, presentation by retired Phoenix Firefighter and author Rebecca Joy, and a drum performance by Daniel Hirtz and StarShine student, ending with the release of 40 white doves.

That evening, StarShine hosted its second annual Boots & Stars Tribute Dinner and Sowie Awards Presentation. The Sowie Awards are given to individuals who have helped the academy thrive while simultaneously serving as an example to students and the broader community of what can be achieved with the right combination of desire, knowledge, skills and hard work. This year’s honorees were Susan French, Debbie Gaby of Sleep America, JoAnn Holland of Women of Central Phoenix/Scottsdale/East Valley, and Robin Milne of Phoenix Suns Charities.

About 200 community members and supporters attended the event, which included cocktails, appetizers and the awards presentation. Guitarist Steve McCarty of the Steve Miller Band provided musical entertainment.
