Bentley Gallery presents 'New Works,' the first solo exhibition in Arizona
by Las Vegas-based artist Tim Bavington,
in association with Mark Moore Gallery of Culver City, Calif.
Music is the genesis of Tim Bavington's paintings. Through synthetic polymer paint, Bavington acts as a translator between the aural and the visual as he transforms guitar solos, melodies and bass lines into vertical bands of color.
Tracks from bands such as Oasis and The Rolling Stones become vibrant bands of color, and bridge compositional concepts between seemingly unlike disciplines. Although Bavington has a method that designates sound to color and composition, the paintings are not literal translations; they remain open to intuition and decision-making, allowing for a distinct artistic presence.
Combinations of the 12-hue color wheel and the 12-tone scale produce the palette of each painting. The paint is applied with airbrush as vertical bands of color. The length of each note within the sequence determines the bandwidth of the painting’s stripes. From a distance the pattern appears hard-edged, perhaps digitally created, but closer inspection reveals softer, blurred edges, similar to one note from a guitar solo bleeding into the next.
“Tim’s work was in our ‘NeoChroma’ exhibition last year, which featured works by artists who use color as the main event. People were overwhelmingly drawn to Tim’s paintings because of their vibrancy and intense color palette, and we wanted to highlight that excitement in a solo show. We are honored to be exhibiting his beautiful paintings again this spring,” said Bentley Gallery owner, Bentley Calverly.
Tim Bavington was born and raised in England and received his BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., before making a permanent move to Las Vegas, where he completed his MFA at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His work is included in the public collections of The Museum of Modern Art, N.Y.; Fredrick R. Weisman Collection, Calif.; Honolulu Art Museum; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, N.Y.; Creative Artists Agency; Joslyn Art Museum, Neb.; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Portland Art Museum; Palm Springs Art Museum; and Denver Art Museum.
New Works runs until March 31, 2014.
