Glam pARTy at Museum

Phoenix Art Museum will be on glam overload

Sat., March 22. pARTy 2014, the annual gala to

support the exhibitions, programs and

education effort of the museum, will give

attendees an opportunity to experience the

Hollywood Costume Exhibition before it opens

to the public Wed., March 26. pARTy, usually

held in November, is timed to coincide with

this exclusive – the first and only showing

west of the Mississippi.

At the helm of this year’s pARTy as chair is Erin Gogolak, who with her committee has glamorous surprises in store for guests. Gogolak has been involved with Phoenix Art Museum for about five years and on the board of trustees for three years. “Art holds us together as a people,” she says of her commitment to the museum. “We want to have a museum on par with being the fifth largest city in the country.”

One surprise has been confirmed: Six-time Academy Award nominee, actress and producer Glenn Close (right) is the guest of honor at this ninth annual event. Two costumes worn by Close will be on view as part of the exhibition – the gray and black houndstooth skirt and jacket worn by Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians and the 18th century inspired gown of Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil from Dangerous Liaisons.

A second, adjunct exhibit in the museum’s Ellman Fashion Design Gallery, Hollywood Red Carpet, will feature two gowns worn by Close, the Giorgio Armani silk gown worn as the nominee for Best Actress Award for Fatal Attraction (1988) and the dark green Zac Posen gown and jacket she wore as a nominee for Best Actress in the 2011 film Albert Nobbs.

Though she won’t give away all of the sizzle, Gogolak says guests will enter the Cummings Great Hall for cocktails, during which time they will be able to browse the exhibition and visit the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery. Then a red carpet will lead them to a tented structure for dinner and dancing to the music of the James Gang band. M Catering is serving a menu to complement the Hollywood supper club feel created by Mark Karp of Angelic Grove.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT  The Hollywood Costume Exhibition celebrates and explores costume design. Featured costumes include those worn in films such as The Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady, Superman and more. This retrospective is the first to gather together some of the most beloved and iconic costumes from pre-eminent public and private collections in a single exhibition.

Approximately 100 costumes from 100 years of filmmaking (1912-2012) will be featured. The exhibition was created by costume designer Deborah Landis, who has worked on films such as Animal House, Three Amigos and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The exhibition originated at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where it drew 250,000 visitors, more than the average annual attendance of 228,500 at Phoenix Art Museum.

Gogolak puts that in perspective: “It’s huge to have this exhibit.”

The exhibition is ticketed. For information on the exhibition, click here.
