Dinner With Churchill
Dinner With Churchill, a fundraising event for the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute, drew an elegant crowd to the Camelback Inn on Oct. 17, 2015. The dinner and program recreated Christmas Day 1941 in the East Room of the White House.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had stayed most of December strategizing with President Roosevelt on how to win the second world war after both nations had been bombed by Japan. On Christmas Day, the two world leaders dined on roast turkey with chestnut dressing plus the trimmings. Guests at Dinner With Churchill enjoyed the same menu.
Churchill scholar Cita Stelzer, author of
the book Dinner With Churchill, offered
a historical perspective, and then joined
joined Senator Jon Kyl for a “fireside
chat” as guests enjoyed the same dessert
served Christmas Day 1941, plum pudding.
At the end of the evening, attendees were
given copies of the book.
News of the collaboration between
Arizona State University, the Arizona
Center for Law and Society, and The
Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law
capped the affair. The Sandra Day
O’Connor Institute will relocate to
Arizona State University’s Downtown
Phoenix campus.
Sandy and Mac Magruder and Lois and Steve Savage chaired the event, and Dr. John A. and Nanci J. Bruner were the presenting sponsors. Billie Jo and Judd Herberger sponsored the reception. The elegant recreation of the White House East Room was the work of White House Design Studio.
