Spotting Elder Abuse

Join us on Friday, June 14, 2013 as our community takes a stand to raise public awareness of elder abuse on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Elder abuse is a crime! It affects older adults from all walks of life. Anyone can become a victim: your friend, your neighbor, a family member … even you. Every year an estimated 2.1 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. 2.1 MILLION is a staggering figure. And that’s only part of the picture. Experts believe that the figures are even greater, and estimate that only 1 in 23 cases are ever reported.
Elder abuse takes many forms: physical abuse; emotional abuse; verbal abuse; neglect by caregivers; sexual abuse; financial abuse and exploitation. Many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in their family’s homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. Learn the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and what you can do to prevent and stop elder abuse. The time to stop elder abuse is NOW!
A special screening of Mickey Rooney’s personal experience of elder abuse “Last Will and Embezzlement” will be shown, followed by a discussion with the producer, Pamela S. K. Glasner. Special recognition and awards will be given to the winners of Arizona’s “Why Should I Care About Elder Abuse?” Junior High Arts Competition. Entertainment will be provided by Ms. Senior Arizona and the Arizona Inspirations Presented by the Area Agency on Aging, Region One and the Maricopa Elder Abuse Prevention Alliance.
