From August 27-29, photography enthusiasts can take a three-day, self drive, guided photography tour of Arizona’s historic Route 66 led by acclaimed photo-journalist Kerrick James. The Roaming Arizona’s Route 66 Workshop will benefit Through Each Others Eyes, a Phoenix-based non-profit organization that utilizes the power of photography to help Valley residents and people around the world understand and appreciate cultures different from their own. An associate photographer and volunteer with Through Each Others Eyes, James’ work has been featured in two best-selling books on Route 66.
Known as the Main Street of America and the Mother Road, U.S. Route 66 is the nation’s most famous highway. In its early years, Route 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. Now its sights and attractions are a nostalgic reflection of a nation on the move. For the Roaming Arizona Route 66 Workshop, James and other volunteer photographers from Through Each Others Eyes have mapped out interesting points of interest and will provide instruction and photography critiques throughout the tour. The budding photographers that are going, may want a more in-depth look at the landscape along Route 66 so the use of a drone can help them scan further than normal cameras can. Websites such as https://www.drdrone.ca/pages/dji-fpv can assist with finding the best drones for this need making this a trip that will not be forgotten.
Day one of the Roaming Arizona Route 66 Workshop will begin in Kingman with a drive east on the longest surviving drivable stretch of Route 66. Stops along the way include Hackberry and its famous general store, Truxton, plus time in Peach Springs and Seligman, where participants will shoot the kitschy side of Route 66. Day two of the workshop will take participants through Ash Fork, Williams, and Flagstaff searching for remains of the Mother Road. The group will then move on to Two Guns and Canyon Diablo with stops in Winslow and Holbrook to shoot murals and the Wigwam Motel. The third and final day of the tour will conclude with a morning shoot at Standing on the Corner Park, and final photography critiques at the historic La Posada.
The Roaming Arizona Route 66 Workshop is open to a limited number of participants. The cost is $995 per person, which includes lodging at “vintage” Route 66 motels, plus a final luncheon and photo critiques. Proceeds from the workshop benefit Through Each Others Eyes.
