Frontdoors Five: How to Celebrate the Kentucky Derby (Even if You’re in Arizona)

You might not be able to actually fly across the country to go to the Kentucky Derby – but that’s no reason not to celebrate. We put together five ways you can still celebrate this time-honored event, even here in Arizona.

  • Get in the spirit with a derby hat. These wide-brimmed fashion statements have become synonymous with the event, so wearing one will really get you in the spirit.
  • Make your pick. Check out the derby website to read up on this year’s contenders and maybe even make a few bets. Word is Classic Empire is favored to win.
  • Perfect your mint julep recipe. For the iconic Kentucky Derby cocktail all you’ll need lots of spearmint, sugar and as much bourbon as you can handle.
  • Party. The Valley’s largest Kentucky Derby party, The Second Annual Derby Dayclub, is happening this Saturday at Turf Paradise.
  • If you’re serious about actually watching the event, TV is probably your best option. Channel 12 will be showing the festivities from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – so even if you do attend one of the parties across the Valley, it’s likely you’ll still have plenty of time to catch part of the show.
