Music at Trinity Series Plans 19 Concerts

Helios, which will perform as part of the Music at Trinity Series

Music at Trinity will present a total of 19 shows featuring visiting organists, local chamber and vocal ensembles, and a Choral Evensong with the Trinity Cathedral Choir this winter and spring.

Under the direction of Dr. Erik Goldstrom, the concerts take place at Trinity Cathedral, 100 West Roosevelt Street (at Central Avenue) in downtown Phoenix. 

The events will include:

January 20 at 3 p.m. – Janette Fishell Organ Concert

Janette Fishell is this year’s featured artist in the annual Helen Peel Memorial Organ Concert. Professor of Organ and Chair of the Organ Department at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, DrFishell is a recitalist and teacher. Her program, “Dances Sacred and Profane,” includes works by William Byrd, Johann Sebastian Bach, Calvin Hampton and Marcel Dupré. The event is free of charge.

February 10 at 4 p.m. – Helios Vocal Ensemble

Phoenix vocal ensemble, Helios, brings music by Marc’Antonio Ingegneri, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Carlos Gesualdo, and Orlando di Lasso in a program called “Shades of Gray.” The event is free of charge.

The Lenten Organ Series features five outstanding organists based in Arizona.  The 30-minute concerts begin at 12:15 p.m. and offer a meditative respite in the middle of the day. These events are also free of charge. Performances include:

     Joey Ripka – Friday, March 15  

     Jeffrey Campbell – Friday, March 22

     Julia Tucker  – Friday, March 29

     Brandon Burns – Friday, April 5

     Peter Mahigian – Friday, April 12

May 5 at 4 p.m. – Urban Nocturnes Chamber Music Ensemble

Trinity Cathedral chamber music group in residence, Urban Nocturnes, will present Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76 No. 3 “Emperor,” Guillame Connesson’s Disco Toccata for clarinet and cello, and Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B Minor Op. 115. Violinist Karen Sinclair and violist Christopher McKay lead the ensemble with cellist Melita Hunsinger, flutist Viviana Cumplido, clarinetist Erin Finkelstein and pianist Olga Gorelik.  Ticket price: $15. 

May 12 at 4 p.m. Oliver Brett Organ Concert

Renowned English organist Oliver Brett will perform works by Hubert Parry, Josef Rheinberger and Healey Willan. Brett is currently a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music, studying organ with Professor David Higgs, who performed last year’s Helen Peel Memorial Organ Concert. The event is free of charge.

May 26 at 4 p.m. Choral Evensong

The series concludes with a Choral Evensong service featuring The Cathedral Choir performing works of Gabriel Jackson.
