Frontdoors Five: Best Ice Cream Spots

Sugar Bowl

It’s that time of year when we are literally living in a giant sauna, with temperatures expected to reach nearly 120 degrees next week. Needless to say, surviving summers in Phoenix isn’t easy — but we’ve found one thing helps and one thing only and that is ICE CREAM. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of great ice cream shops here. We’re firm believers that ice cream is never really bad, but we took pains to rank the very best five spots.
1. Churn
To everything, Churn, Churn, Churn, there is a season…. We love the old-fashioned, creamy taste of the freshly churned ice cream – and the endless options are eye-popping. You can have your choice of traditional ice cream with toppings in a pretzel, sugar, cake or waffle cone, a float, milkshake or a sundae. Why not try them all over the course of the summer?
2. Creamistry
Creamistry is one of the newest concepts to come to Arizona, and it really is an experience. It’s made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream, yes liquid nitrogen as in in you’ll see the fumes as your ice cream is being mixed before your eyes. It’s ice cream high drama! But it really, really good – they use high-quality, natural and organic ingredients and have over 70 flavors and toppings to choose from.
3. Baked Bear
Few things beat an magnificent ice cream sandwich, and Baked Bear, hands down, has some of the best in town. You get to pick two fresh baked cookies, your ice cream, toppings and then you have to get it warm pressed. There’s a reason they always have a line out the door.
4. Sugar Bowl
Sugar Bowl is more than just an ice cream shop – it’s a Scottsdale landmark, seeing as it’s been open for nearly 60 years. The old-fashioned, bright pink parlor is a must-visit, if not for its incredible ice cream then for the fun experience. While it might lack the extensive selection of other shops, it makes up for it with classic favorites like ice cream floats, shakes, malts and old-fashioned sodas with ice cream.
5. Sweet Republic
Sweet Republic has set itself apart by emphasizing the quality taste that comes from creating handmade ice cream from scratch with fresh, local ingredients. Plus, we love getting to experience all of their unique flavors like sweet corn, carrot cake, honey lavender and basil lime.
