Arizona Qualified Charities

Arizona Autism United

Arizona Autism United (AZA United) was founded in 2006 by a group of families who were experiencing a shortage of quality care for their children.  Their concept was to develop a nonprofit organization whose sole focus was providing high quality direct services to children in our community, so that anyone in need could get help.

The most recent statistics estimate that there are over 25,000 affected children in Arizona, with a diagnosis rate of 1 in 64. As we continue to expand and improve our services to meet these ever growing needs, we are guided by our mission to help as many families as possible with individualized supports.

AZA United currently serves hundreds of children every day throughout the valley with a wide variety of therapies and supports.  We believe that involving families at all levels is the key to improving service delivery systems and child outcomes, both now and for the future. Together with our families, and our community partners, we are helping today and building tomorrow.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is not your typical organization. Children realize their potential and build their futures because of the strong, professionally supported mentoring relationships that change lives for the better. These positive influences have a ripple effect through families, schools and our community.

For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As part the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, BBBSAZ makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, across Maricopa County, and parts of Gila and Pinal Counties. We develop and support positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Children are matched through the traditional community-based program where Bigs and Littles build a friendship while enjoying activities in the community, and through our site-based program where Bigs meet at the Littles’ school to help with homework, spend time on the playground and talk about what’s going on in the child’s life. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are: more confident in their schoolwork performance, able to get along better with their families, 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school.

Duet Partners in Health and Aging

Help and hope – two things we all need at some point in our lives. When you do, Duet is here when you need us. Through Duet’s compassionate, free-of-charge-services to homebound adults, family caregivers, faith communities and grandparents raising grandchildren, compassion, dignity, and hope abound in our community. Duet is a local nonprofit, interfaith organization that has been working diligently to promote health and well-being for older adults in greater Phoenix since 1981.

Duet pairs caring volunteers with homebound adults, affectionately referred to as ‘neighbors,’ who can no longer drive yet wish to remain living in their own homes with dignity. Free-of-charge volunteer services include grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments, friendly visits and phone calls, paperwork assistance, minor home repairs, computer training, and home safety assessments.

Being a family caregiver or raising a grandchild can take an emotional, physical and financial toll. Duet helps by providing support groups, respite, workshops, retreats, personalized guidance and accurate referral information. Duet also trains registered nurses to serve as faith community nurses, who in turn develop programs in congregations that promote health in body, mind, and spirit.

Volunteer. Donate. Ask for help. By working in tandem with others, we create a stronger and more caring community. Together, we are partners in health and aging.

Arizona Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations

AASK (Aid to Adoption of Special Kids)

The purpose of AASK (Aid to Adoption of Special Kids) is to provide relationships for children in foster care.  Arizona has almost 18,000 children in its child welfare system who have experienced abuse, neglect, and abandonment.  AASK connects these children with stable, caring foster families, adoptive families, siblings, kin, and adult mentors.

Founded in 1988 by Katherine “Kax” Herberger, AASK was created to find adoptive homes for medically fragile babies.  Since that time, AASK has expanded its services to include any child in foster care, and continues to offer specialized training for families who care for children with developmental delays, disabilities, and behavioral health challenges.

Other specialized services include the Todos Los Niños program offered in Spanish and English which matches children of Hispanic and Latino heritage with families of similar background, preserving language and culture.  AASK has units dedicated to meeting the special needs of Kinship foster families and providing regular respite care.

In addition to foster care and adoption services, the AASK Sibling program reunites brothers and sisters separated by foster care, and the AASK Mentoring program matches mentors with foster youth in group homes and shelters with a particular focus on teens preparing to “age out” of foster care without a family.

AASK is Arizona’s largest non-profit agency with the sole focus of finding relationships for children in foster care, with 1,400 children currently placed in AASK family homes or matched with AASK mentors.  Since inception, AASK has found forever families for over 2,500 children in care.

StreetLightUSA

Since 2009, StreetLightUSA continues to create an environment for spiritual, emotional, and physical healing for victims of child sex trafficking age 11-17. Girls are placed at our campus by child welfare system, the justice system, first responders, and parents.

The average age of a child coerced into sex trafficking is 12-14. Our trauma-informed approach guides the girls in our care through three stages of healing; Stabilization, Growth, and Independence.

We cannot knowingly permit the sexual exploitation of young girls in our communities, yet, it’s happening in our own backyard. Every two minutes, a child is forced to sell or exchange her body for the basic needs of life. Teen runaways are often trafficked within 48 hours of being on the street.

Public Schools

Arizona School for the Arts (ASA)

ASA: Building Resilient Leaders

Arizona School for the Arts (ASA) is a nonprofit, public charter school educating 5th through 12th grade students. Unlike most schools in the United States offering a rigorous college preparatory education combined with a performing arts curriculum, ASA’s student admissions are not based on arts auditions or academic test scores. A public lottery guides enrollment and ensures access to the arts and high-level academics for students of all backgrounds. Students must select a performing arts focus in theatre, dance, or music. Established in 1995, ASA has consistently been recognized as one of Arizona’s top performing academic schools and as a Civic Engagement School of Excellence.

“ASA has given each of us a passion and hunger for the arts while also cultivating within us a desire to explore the world, question the world, and change the world. We have been given the tools necessary to excel as scholars, as artists, and most importantly, as individuals”, said student Emily Thielen, Class of 2017. ASA encourages students to take risks and learn from failures, be innovative thinkers, collaborative, and use empathetic reasoning. The school has been the recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award for Educational Organization.

“The arts have the power to transform us, elevate our experiences, stimulate our creativity and our curiosity, and connect us to one another. Beyond this intrinsic value, study in the arts contributes to student achievement, success, and happiness” said Leah Fregulia, Head of School/CEO and 2016 Piper Fellow. Donate at goasa.org!
