Neiman’s Style Setter

A Wildcat returned to Arizona the first week of October. Matthew Singer, a Long Island, N.Y., native and graduate of The University of Arizona, charmed an invited group of fashion-forward men at Neiman Marcus as he shared the trends for fall.

Singer, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Retail and Consumer Sciences from UA, is the Neiman Marcus director of men’s fashion. The clothing industry is in his blood. His father has worked on the wholesale end of the business for ABS in New York for 30 years, and his twin brother also works in the clothing industry.

Singer’s plan was to follow his father into wholesale. But during summers on Long Island, where he worked in retail, and during his two-year stint at ABS after college, he found himself gravitating to the sales floor.

“I loved being out in the store,” he says. “I love clothes, and I love people. I feel very comfortable on the selling floor.

From ABS, he moved into the buying office at Scoop. And then to Bloomingdale’s, where he got involved in design, selecting and customizing styles for the store’s brand. And now, to Neiman Marcus. He’s been at Neiman Marcus for 10 months. Those looks in the glossy Neiman Marcus magazine? All selected by Singer, in collaboration with the store’s buying team.

Singer thinks he knows what a guy wants to wear and identifies these Neiman Marcus fall looks for men.

1.     Patterned suits and essential pieces. Plaids, windowpane and small checks.

2.     Colored, especially spice-tone, pants: mustard, forest green, burgundy and sage.

3.     Scarves. Worn with a suit or sport jacket, a scarf can complete your look.

4.     Topcoats. These are a big trend on the runway. If you’re bold, try a statement coat with a dramatic fur collar.

5.     Vests. Choose a quilted vest to wear with jeans or over a sport jackets. Try a quilted plaid wool quilted vest.

6.     Alternative eveningwear. This is one of Singer’s favorite trends for the season. Every man should own a classic black tux, he says, but the tux can become a little “redundant.” Try an evening jacket in velvet or gray cashmere. Or try a pattern, like Etro’s paisley jacket. These can be cocktail chic and a black-tie option. With a bolder jacket, wear an evening scarf and a plain white shirt.

7.     The evening loafer, such as the ones by Jimmy Choo or Donald Pliner. These can be paired with a classic tux.

For men who hesitate to make a bold change, Singer advises to tiptoe in. Add touches here and there. A plaid suit a little too bold? Try a plaid pocket square or tie. Build a basic wardrobe, and then spice it up.

“Dressing is an activity for me,” Sidnger says. “The only time I get nervous is when I come out dressed for the day and my wife says, ‘Are you wearing that?’ ”
