White Christmas

The Dec. 10 black-tie gala to benefit Ryan House had a ’40s theme, inspired by Irving Berlin, who wrote his holiday classic “White Christmas” while staying at the Arizona Biltmore.

Guests received a dusting of artificial snow as they entered the Grand Lobby of the Biltmore, passing by an evergreen tree bedecked in lights and choral music sung by the Male Chorus of Phoenix. The tranquil spot provided a perfect photo opportunity for many of the attendees.

The reception was held in the lobby under giant twinkling stars hanging from the multi-story ceiling. A trumpeter called guests to the Gold Room, set with rich gold table linens and simple white flowers, for entertainment and dinner. Young ballerinas from the Scottsdale School of Ballet charmed the nearly full house of 150. Following a prime-rib dinner, Jim May and The Affinity Band brought guests to the dance floor. Port wine and cigars were offered on the Gold Terrace after dinner.

The evening honored Judy and Bill Schubert, former CEO of Kitchell, who were instrumental in the development and building of Ryan House, which opened in March 2009 provides respite for children with life-threatening conditions and their families. Linda and Bill Langer and Sande and Bud Davidson co-chaired the event.
