The 14th annual Today's Kids, Tomorrow's Stars gala, presented by Universal Technical Institute, was held Feb. 15 at the Arizona Biltmore. More than 1,250 guests helped raise a record-breaking $2.3 million net for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. 

Twelve extraordinary Youth of the Year finalists shared their inspirational stories of struggle and triumph. Camrae McManaman, a junior at Peoria High School, was named 2014 Youth of the year. In spite of her abusive father's suicide, she rose to become a leader in her community and her classroom, and on the playing field, as well as an accomplished artist and poet. Her moving story brought a tearful audience to its feet in ovation. 

Honorary Chairman Norman McClelland, chairman of the board of Shamrock Foods Company, was presented the Star of the Year award. 

A fun-filled show from the imagination of Michael Barnard of Phoenix Theatre featured a "mad scientist" emcee and a memorable trip to the stars. Guests enjoyed silent and live auctions, and entertainment by 8-year-old club member Jayden Hawkins and BGCMP alum and pianist William Joseph. 

Joanne Solomon, CFO of Amkor Technology, chaired the record-breaking event.

Today’s Kids Tomorrow’s Stars

The March 2 dinner to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix was record-breaking. It netted its highest total to date – $2.5 million. It was attended by its largest number of guests to date – 1,371. And It had its largest silent auction to date.

 

The event recognizes 12 youths from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. At the end of the evening, one youth is named the 2013 Youth of the Year. This year’s winner was Johana Lopez, a senior at North Canyon High School with a 4.3 GPA and 660 hours of community service in 2012.

 

Jon Flora, president of Fry’s Foods, served as the evening’s honorary chair. Fruit for the edible centerpieces was donated by Fry’s and distributed to Boys and Girls clubs after the show. Universal Technical Institute and Amkor Technology sponsored the event.

Today’s Kids Tomorrow’s Stars

More than 1,300 people turned out at the Arizona Biltmore on Feb. 18 to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix as it celebrated 12 extraordinary youth. The event was sponsored by Universal Technical Institute and honored long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs Doug Parker, US Airways president and CEO.

 

Among the attendees were Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Commissioner of Major League Baseball Bud Selig, Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick and many others who share Parker’s vision of preparing tomorrow’s leaders today through educational advancement.

 

The Stars event featured both silent and live auctions, among them a VIP trip to the American Idol season finale and celebrity after party and a European Concert Tour featuring Elton John in Germany and Madonna in London.

 

The evening culminated with Chloe Johnson, a junior from St. Mary’s High School, being named the 2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix Youth of the Year. Johnson will advance to the state competition in April and could go on to meet President Obama in the White House as a National Youth of the Year finalist.
