Teaming Up For Kids

Luis Gonzalez scored another winning run when he stepped to the plate for Florence Crittenton on March 1. The popular former Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder, who now is part of the front-office team, was the featured speaker for the 10th Annual Teaming Up For Kids luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore.

The mid-day event drew 800 guests to support the 116-year-old Florence Crittenton, whose mission is to help young women in need. Money raised from the event benefits the agency’s core programs, including Transitional Living, Therapeutic Group Home and Community-Based Services.

Missy and Lyle Anderson received the first-ever Visionaries Award. The couple was acknowledged as integral to the growth of the organization, enabling both the campus and programs to expand. Missy Anderson shared how her first visits to the Florence Crittenton campus more than 18 years ago compelled her do what she could to reach out to the young women residents at this critical time in their lives.

The annual Hope Award was presented to Dr. Robert Spetzler, director of Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. In accepting the award, he spoke of the hope medical and surgical advancements provide to BNI patients as well as to students at Girls Leadership Academy of Arizona, a charter school on the campus of Florence Crittenton. Earlier in the week, Spetzler had hosted at BNI several of the young women who are interested in the medical field.

Derrick Hall, president and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks, introduced Gonzalez, who spoke briefly and then sat down with Hall for a question-and-answer session.

Cathy and Mo Stein and Amy and Derrick Hall co-chaired the luncheon, which was presented by the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com.

Teaming Up For Kids

The ninth annual luncheon March 3 to benefit Florence Crittenton was a slam dunk for the young people who utilize the organization’s services. Keynote speak Bill Walton shared words of wisdom and lessons learned through his career, focusing on teamwork and the ability to overcome adversity.

HOPE Award recipient Gerda Weissmann Klein inspired guests with her powerful story of surviving the Holocaust.

Tables for the nearly 900 guests were topped with brightly colored bags that included toiletries, bath items and clothing/hair accessories for the young women. David Bauer, Oonagh Boppart and Barbara Lytle underwrote the centerpieces.

In addition to the silent auction, the “dream bag” fundraiser, where table hosts bid silently to receive an overflowing gift bag of goodies for everyone at the table, helped fill the coffers.

In all, the efforts generated almost $460,000 to support the organization’s core programs. The luncheon was chaired by Rebecca Ailes-Fine and Kathy Munson, and the presenting sponsor was The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com.
