Out of Africa

Arizona State University Institute of Human Origins celebrated its 30th anniversary April 26 with a gala dinner. The evening, which took “Out of Africa” as its theme, referencing the discovery of "Lucy" in Ethiopia, was held at Phoenix Zoo. It started at the new orangutan habitat, and dinner was then served lakeside.

The 270 guests enjoyed a silent auction, dinner and featured speaker Donald Johanson, Ph.D. Johanson is the founding director of the organization, which is part of ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change.

The evening raised money for research in Africa and the United States as well as for student scholarships.

Laura Roskind served as gala committee chair. The dinner was part of a two-day event that included a symposium at Neeb Hall on the campus of ASU.
